The Blaue Gans was a good find for us as we wanted modernity amidst the Old City. Honestly, there's hardly anything negative we can say about the hotel. Other than the fact that it was expensive!
We were booked in a "medium" room for three nights, just a floor above the main reception, with a view facing the cliff. Though very near traffic, we hardly heard much noise. Bathroom came with a large bathtub were we could enjoy warm baths after a cold day out around in the Old Quarter. (Some bath salts would have been great since Salzburg was once famous for its Salt trade from the mountains! - they could have collaborated with the little shop down the Gertreidegasse called the Crescendo, that sells different types of salts, sugars, oils, etc that promotes salt as spa products). Interesting that they didn't leverage on this as part of their marketing. But well... they probably didn't need it.
Breakfast was hearty and we didn't have to jostle with a "crowd" even if the hotel was quite filled up. The food was great and we found out from a local friend that the restaurant is one of the more popular ones apart from its neighbor, the Goldener Hirsch, since he funnily enough couldn't get a reservation to treat us to dinner on one of the nights - but that's a different story. Suffice to point out that because the food is good, hence, the restaurant is super popular.
We loved the little touches it had within the hotel such as iPads on walls or amidst bookshelves in the library, and I think there was even an iMac at the reception also to provide you with any information you need to look for by yourself; a pretty little desk (we guessed it could've been on each floor) that offers small snacks and selection of teas to tide you over during the night if you can't sleep; and personal notes around the hotel to get you acquainted with facilities that are available within the premises.
Oh, if there is one thing we need to highlight is that the feather pillows (while nice and soft) was almost flat. That's the standard pillow offer. For some of you, this could be a problem. For us, we could've asked for more pillows or a different type but we didn't really bother. Still had mighty good sleeps. You may want to give it a shot and ask housekeeping if you prefer alternatives.
Our bathroom had sparkling white subway tiles which made for a clean look and the deep tub / shower was great for warm baths. I had packed my Lush "Bath Ballistics" and "Snow Fairy" so I was a happy camper!
All in, if ever we visit Salzburg again for another dose of "Hills that are Alive" and do all "Our Favorite Things" singing "Do Re Mi" we'd definitely stay at the Blaue Gans again and hopefully get another friend for "Duckie Bloo" we adopted from our bathroom!
Oh, by the way, for Sound of Music enthusiasts, be forewarned that the locals don't really understand what the fuss is all about with that movie, although they do concede it brought in the tourists flocking in to Salzburg more than Mozart!
