Two Thumbs Up - The Una Maison Milano

On our last European trip in December 2012, we stayed at the Una Maison Milano's Junior Suite. We wished we could've stayed there longer. Milan was unfortunately just a few days pitstop before we went to Venice and thereafter to Vienna and Salzburg. More on those in later posts. First, the Una Maison Milano.

You can't beat their location. It's a stone's throw from the Duomo and a few steps from the lobby and around the corner is already the underground metro. Loads of cafes and restaurants around apart from being a holler away from the high fashion boutique strip of "via Montenapoleone". Yessss!! Fashionistas, from the Una, via Montenapoleone is roughly about 10mins walking distance. Window-licking heaven, and you'd get blinded by all the bling from the usual big names - and all I got from all that window licking was a pair of extra socks.

Anyway, upon arrival from the airport, we were greeted by super friendly staff - in fact, they were all quite friendly and helpful and they seem to really enjoy what they do. At reception, we were pointed to uber-nice glass jars of marshmallows, lollies and other sweet treats to choose! I love that kind of welcome. Check in was a breeze for us.

The hotel reception is small though modern. But against the white walls and minimal decor, we got the overall sense that this hotel has  a huge "heart." Service is quite personalized and they do go all out to make you feel welcomed and at home. Upon request, we received a room with a balcony, and you also get to choose an item from an array of fun stuff such as an iPod docking system, or a Wii, a DVD player and the like. The bathroom in the Junior Suite is of substantial size and amenities are well thought of complete with quick fixes for polished nails. Nice and a tad different than other hotels we've stayed.

(Btw, we booked the Junior Suite this time around because we knew that European hotels will generally be small and we thanked our lucky stars we did so coz we needed the space to re-sort our huuuuuge luggages. If you don't have that much luggage, then the standard rooms are not too bad). The pix below is similar to ours which I borrowed from their site. This one is larger than a Junior Suite so take away maybe another 10-15sqm from this.

If you've decided to give Una Maison in Milan a shot, it's also worth your while to also pre-order breakfast upon reservation as you'd save some money and you get to choose your breakfast items upon arrival. There's no breakfast room so the meals are brought directly to you in your private quarters at your preferred time - which was a plus for us since we didn't fancy "waking up" so early in the morning! and what a wonderful surprise to receive such a wide spread over and above what we had ordered. We could in fact skip lunch - as a matter of fact, we DID.

(this was just for ONE person!)

Tip - since the hotel's right in the center of town, you may want to ask for higher floors if you need some quiet. On the other hand, it's in the center of town and the area does get quieter at night coz all the tourists will already be either at dinner or indoors somewhere else and shops are closed so it's quiet anyway.

If we're ever in Milano again, Una's definitely a great pitstop for us. Maybe next time, we'll try a different room.
